Saw -2004

With its truly awful sequels, Saw may have resurrected the so-called torture-prone genre,  but the original Saw is nowhere near as gross-gusting as you think it is, and happens to be superb horror. Yes, the title refers to an object that a sick killer proposes someone use to cut their leg off rather than use a key to release a cuff, but Saw is more than that. This movie is made on a minimal budget by Leigh Whannell and James Wan.

The Conjuring

Directed by James Wan and written by Chad Hayes and Carey W.The Conjuring is a supernatural horror film that was released in 2013. It is the first installment in The Conjuring Universe franchise. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga play Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators and authors associated with significant hauntings.

Their true-life reports influenced the story and film franchise The Amityville Horror.  The Warrens came to the aid of the Perron family, who encountered increasingly frightening happenings at their Rhode Island farmhouse in 1971.

Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Scream revived the joys of the teen slasher film, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are entirely to blame for the return of descent zombies to our screens. Shaun of the Dead, the first film in Edgar Wright’s ‘Cornetto Trilogy,’ follows the titular Shaun as he plods through his drab London existence, only to find beautifully late that the majority of the population has been changed into shambling cannibals.

While it slickly plays for laughs, Shaun of the Dead is, at its core, a horror film. It follows Romero’s guidelines with a sluggish zombie horde, so their astounding relentlessness is a persistent horror, mitigated with a superb humorous script.

You can watch it on Amazon Prime Video.

The Babadook

Jennifer Kent’s eerie pop-up book became a boogeyman for an entire generation almost immediately after its release. “Have you ever seen the Babadook? “. The Babadook is terrifying. This is a film that gets under your skin and stays there, telling the story of a young bereaved widow trying to care for her newborn kid.

The Babadook, like the best horror movies on this list, isn’t only about terrifying its viewers. The connections between bereavement and melancholy are not by chance, and it’s worth noting that one of the most horrific scenes in the film has nothing to do with a monster and everything to do with a young mother losing control of her son while driving.

You can watch it on Amazon Prime Video.
