In the stories told, several new formulas were tried out, Whereas some of them even laid the way for some of the decade’s biggest songs. Mughal-E-Azam

Mughal-E-Azam is the first film on our list of classic Hindi films from the 1960s. The Indian film industry has yet to produce a film of this magnitude. The love story of Prince Salim and Anarkali, a courtesan, inspired this timeless epic. It depicted Emperor Akbar’s feud with his son, Prince Salim. This was without a doubt the most spectacular musical blockbuster of its time.

Mother India

The film’s title was chosen to contradict American novelist Katherine Mayo’s anti-Indian diatribe Mother India, published in 1927. The film contains numerous references to Hindu mythology, and its protagonist has been hailed as a metonymic picture of a Hindu woman who exemplifies strong moral values and the through self-sacrifice, an idea of what it means to be a mother to society.

Nargis, Sunil Dutt, and Rajendra Kumar starred in the picture, which garnered an Academy Award nomination. One of the most legendary Bollywood films ever made, the film is noted for its cultural and nationalistic significance.

Devdas

Released in 1955 Hindi-language period drama film Devdas directed by Bimal Roy and based on Sharat ChandraChattopadhyay’s novel.Dilip Kumar played the main role, while Vyjayanthimala played Chandramukhi, a courtesan, and Suchitra Sen made her Bollywood debut as Parvati ‘Paro’.

The film was named one of the Top 25 Must-See Bollywood Films by Indiatimes Movies in 2005. Devdas was also ranked second on Corey K. Creekmur’s Top 10 Bollywood Films list from the University of Iowa. Under the direction of Kamal Bose, the film’s cinematography and lighting accentuated Dilip Kumar’s emotional suffering. Kumar’s performance in the film was named one of Forbes’ “25 Greatest Acting Performances of Indian Cinema.”

Barsaat Ki Raat

P. L. Santoshi directed and R. Chandra produced the 1960 Indian Hindi-language romantic musical film Barsaat Ki Raat (lit. ‘A Rainy Night’). The film, which stars Madhubala, Bharat Bhushan, and Shyama, is regarded as a classic example of the romantic musical cinema genre.

Unlike many other contemporary Bollywood films, this drama featured strong female characters who spoke their thoughts and chose their paths. Even the conflicts depicted in this film were more realistic than ordinary family dramas. This film also celebrates the life of “singing girls,” who were not well-liked in society at that time.

Guide

A romantic drama based  on R. K. Narayan’s novel The Guide, released in 1965 casting  Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman lead actors’ award-winning performances cemented the film’s place in cinematic history. The music, composed by S. D. Burman is timeless. It was ranked 4 on Time magazine’s list of the Best Bollywood Classics.  Pearl S. Buck wrote a 120-minute English adaptation, which Tad Danielewski directed and produced. In 2007, 42 years after its release, this film was presented at the Cannes Film Festival.

Gumnaam

The Hindi mystery thriller is based on Agatha Christie’s classic And There Were None. This Indian adaptation went on to become a tremendous hit with a great soundtrack. Gumnaam was released in 1965 starring Manoj Kumar, Nanda, Pran, Helen, and Mehmood.

Bobby

Bobby’s film was the first in Bollywood to establish the teen love genre. The film, which marked the debut of both Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia.

The movie was a trend-setter and became quite popular and was frequently imitated. It was the first film in Bollywood to feature a young romance with a rich-versus-poor conflict as the backdrop. This plot inspired a slew of films in the years and decades that followed. Bobby is one of the ‘Top 25 Must-See Bollywood Films,’ according to Indiatimes Movies. In 1980, the film was adapted as Parvaz dar Ghafas in Persian. You can watch it on Google play MX player.
